Why tools matter more than slogans
Every operator we review has a responsible gambling page. Most say similar things. What distinguishes a serious operator from one going through the motions is not the page but the tools behind it — how easy they are to find, how quickly they take effect and how hard they are to undo. In our audits we test each tool on our own account rather than reading about it, because the difference between a limit that applies instantly and one that applies “after review” is the whole point.
This guide describes the five tools we look for, how we expect each to behave, and what we found at the operators on this site in our October 2026 round.
Deposit and loss limits
A deposit limit caps how much you can pay in over a day, week or month. A loss limit caps net losses over the same periods. Both should be available before your first deposit, apply to every payment method including crypto, and take effect immediately when lowered. Raising a limit should involve a cooling-off period (24 hours is the usual minimum) so that a decision made during a losing session cannot be acted on until the session is over.
In our tests, every operator on the list offered deposit limits. Loss limits were less universal: PrimeLuck and VelvetPlay offered deposit limits only. NovaBet, Altura and Solstice applied a 24-hour delay to any increase; two operators allowed an increase to take effect immediately, which we noted against their safety score.
Session reminders and reality checks
A reality check is a pop-up at a set interval, typically every 30 or 60 minutes, that shows how long you have been playing and your net result for the session, and asks whether you want to continue. It sounds minor. In practice it is one of the few tools that interrupts play rather than preventing it, and it is most useful for the kind of extended session where time disappears.
We look for a reminder that cannot be dismissed without reading it, that shows a real net figure rather than just elapsed time, and that is on by default or at least prominent in settings. Orbit Casino and Altura had the clearest implementations we saw; several operators buried the setting three menus deep.
Time-outs
A time-out is a short break (24 hours, a week, a month) during which you cannot log in. It is the right tool for a bad run or a bad mood, and it should be available with one click from the account page, take effect immediately and be impossible to cancel early. Some operators ask you to contact support to set one, which defeats the purpose; if you have to explain yourself to a chat agent, many people will not bother.
Every operator on our list offered a time-out. Altura, NovaBet and Solstice made it self-service with immediate effect; at Vertex and PrimeLuck a chat request was required.
Self-exclusion
Self-exclusion is the long-term version: six months, a year, five years or permanently. During exclusion the operator must close your account, refuse new registrations in your name and stop all marketing. Under the EGC regime, exclusion registered with one operator is shared across all licensees via a central scheme; under the EGA, it applies only to the operator where you registered it unless you use a third-party scheme.
We test whether exclusion can be set without contacting support, whether marketing actually stops (we check our inbox) and whether a re-registration attempt is refused. Every operator on our list passed the first two. We have not yet attempted re-registration tests at every operator and say so in the relevant reviews.
Using the tools before you need them
The most common mistake we see is treating these tools as emergency measures. They work far better as defaults. Set a deposit limit at a level you would be comfortable losing before you make your first deposit. Turn on a reality check at 30 minutes. Decide in advance what a bad session looks like and what you will do about it. None of this takes more than five minutes, and it changes the character of every session that follows.
If you are worried about your own play, or someone else’s, the support organisations listed on our responsible gambling page offer free, confidential help. Gambling should be entertainment with a budget, never a way to make money.
Frequently asked questions
Can I lower a limit instantly?
Yes, at every operator we reviewed. Lowering takes effect immediately; raising should involve a cooling-off period.
Does self-exclusion at one casino cover others?
Under the EGC scheme, yes, across all licensees. Under the EGA, only at the operator where you set it unless you use a third-party scheme.
Will setting a limit affect my bonuses?
No. Limits apply to your deposits and losses, not to your eligibility for promotions.
